Five Ways to Make the Most Out of Your Self-Storage Unit

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Making the most out of your New York Storage unit starts with planning. Here are five tips you’ll appreciate before making your purchase and moving your goods!

1) Know Your Measurements: Before you can determine the size of the unit and your belongings you should understand how to measure and determine square footage. A foot is twelve inches long. To determine square footage take the length and multiply it by the width of your room or object.
2) Determine Your Unit Size: Figure out the unit size you need before making your purchase. This starts with making a list of the items you’ll be bringing. There are many online tools that can assist you with determining the size of the room you will need. The UncleBobs.com Self Storage website has a tool for figuring out your recommended self-storage facility size. The sizes range from 5’ x 5’ to 20’ x 20’. They hold anything from the contents of just one small room or office, to entire households, boats, trailers and commercial sized offices.
3) Decide the Best Way to Pack Your Unit Before you Begin: Planning how to add the items to your room is the most critical part, otherwise you may find yourself unable to correctly fit some of the items in the unit. For the most part, you should start from a corner placing your largest square and rectangle objects in first. Put the largest, heaviest items with the smallest chance of breaking in the back. Pile your smaller more delicate items on top so you’ll have more options on how to stack them. Remember if you will need to come back to your unit for something, put that item close to the front.
4) Treat your Stored Items with Care: Clean, dry and rinse all appliances before putting them into storage. Place glass items in thick boxes with pieces individually wrapped. Make sure to individually wrap glass table tops and mirrors and place them on their sides. Lamps should be wrapped and placed in their own boxes.
5) Maintain Your Unit and Keep Your Belongings: Look into climate and humidity options for your Storage Unit. Humidity controlled units help to prevent mold, rust, paper rot and wood damage. Climate control options cool the unit in the summer and warm it in the winter which is great for when you spend time in your unit.
