For those of you who haven’t heard, Four Loko drink is an alcholic energy drink that’s making a stir on the market today. It was created by a company called Fusion Projects, LLC which was founded by three college students from Ohio State University. The product was released in 2008 and made available in orange, fruit punch, lemonade, cranberry lemonade, grape, watermelon, blue raspberry and lemon lime flavors. The alcoholic energy drink has an alcohol level similar to that of wine or beer.
Energy drinks were first introduced in 1985 with Jolt Cola. Followed by Josta from Pepsi Co. in 1995, the first energy drink produced by a major US beverage company. But it wasn’t until 1997 that one of the most well-known energy beverages was introduced, Red Bull. The market has grown from 8 million dollars per year in sales in the early 2000’s to roughly 10 billion in 2010.
The idea of mixing alcohol content with an energy drink was actually introduced with the classic drink “rum and coke”. However, Vodka and Redbull became the rage in the early 2000’s and contained more caffeine than a traditional “rum and coke”. Because of the widespread demand for such beverages, drinks like Four Loko came on the market and grew rapidly in popularity. Some consumers prefer an energy alcohol mix to improve stimulation while others believe it covers the taste of alcohol.
In November 2010 the US Food and Drug Administration warned Four Loko, as well as a number of other similar alcoholic energy drink manufacturers; that caffeine is an “unsafe” additive to an alcoholic beverage. The specific alarming factor being that caffeine masks the symptoms of intoxication, therefore making it difficult for an intoxicated person to determine their own capabilities. This causes people to continue drinking after they would have normally stopped or makes them more susceptible to making bad decisions such as driving while intoxicated. In response, Four Loko and other alcoholic energy drink manufacturers removed caffeine from their products ingredients.
